Game Day!

Time for all to
pull on that jersey
and join the stadium throng.

Everyone will
act as one
with well-worn cheers
and phones held high.

All will demand
calls fall their way
as all always do.
Nothing new.

As I rain contempt
on Sunday’s sameness
I realize
I’m wrong
about all.

Sunday’s game spurs
hugs and high-fives
amongst those
who wouldn’t otherwise.

It gives each and all
a chance to breathe,
a needed reprieve
from screens and the road.

Some of the all
are sweet young loves
holding the hands
they’ll never let go.

A few of the all
are fathers to daughters
lost to the streets below.

to Sunday’s game.

What I called
Sunday’s sameness
is in truth
