arms around her neck

the hollow of his back
as he falls asleep

the black summer night: laser point stars
that sometimes move
and sometimes stay still

the white throated sparrow
and her plaintive call

all that is gone
and coming still

blood and muscle

footsteps—not light
breath—a rhapsody of wheezes

codons of DNA—everywhere
fingerprints—on windows, doors

but you--

left before the sun
came up
before the world
even dreamt
you were gone
