Luggage

​I carry around—this body
                             suitcase of bones
                             blood and muscle
 
footsteps—not light
breath—a rhapsody of wheezes
 
codons of DNA—everywhere
fingerprints—on windows, doors
 
but you--
 
left before the sun
came up
before the world
even dreamt
you were gone

About the writer

Karen Vogt grew up in Manitoba and has spend most of her summers at her family’s cottage on Lake Winnipeg, drawing inspiration from all the creatures and biosystems that are at home in the ancient lake basin.  Karen is a social worker by day and a yoga/pilates/ukulele/piano playing being at night. Karen has a degree in English literature and has taken creative writing courses at the University of Winnipeg and through McNally Robinson bookstore’s classroom program. She has won an award for writing through the University of Winnipeg and sees herself as an emerging writer who has had some of her poetry published.
