My mother, the mother of the boy next door And the mother of my friend, Holds a TeD-Ex masterclass meeting in our living room. She was telling them How I was striving to take her to an early grave. The mother of the boy next door agreed and said her boy too Will, one of these days take her to an early grave too. And the mother of my friend said the same, My mother told them how I’m going to finish her And kill her with a heart seizure. And the mother of the boy next door agreed And said that she would gladly die of a heart seizure Because her boy doesn’t care. I told my friends we must change our ways For if we don’t - We might be beset with a series of funerals and burials. Antreka Tladi was born in Jane Furse, Limpopo. He grew up in Phokwane, Brooklyn, Republic of South Africa where he received his primary and secondary education and currently lives. His poems have appeared in local and international anthologies and journals including the Avbob Poetry Project, Calabash Literary Journal, New Coin and the Otherwise Engaged Literature and Art Journal among others. His debut collection of poetry titled Mother’s Kitchen and Other Places was published in 2023.
