![]() Please tell us a little bit about your most recent work. “Only Human (Act One)” is the first in a four-act series of novellas. A Dark Fantasy novella, it’s a series of interconnected tales told to a distraught priest by a devious, storytelling Pooka (Irish Fairy). Some of the characters in the book include the Devil, demons, witches, and shapeshifting faeries. What was your motivation for writing it? Originally, I sat down to write a short story. Then it became something more. I wanted to write something I’d enjoy reading. Are you currently working on any side projects? I’m always working on side projects. I’m also working on laying the groundwork for a lengthier Dark Fantasy series with a strong and (hopefully) unique female protagonist. What motivated you to become a writer? I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. I loved reading and playing make believe. I was the director and storyteller among my friends as a child. When I received a typewriter as a gift one year, I started writing down my stories. Do you have any unique writing rituals? I think I’m like most writers. I take off my jewelry, let my hair down, turn on my writing music for the project I’m working on, make sure I’m in an environment where I can get in the zone, and type until the letters rub off the keys. Do you feel close to your characters? If yes, how so? If no, how do you maintain a distance? It depends on the character, but it would be more accurate to say I feel closer to certain situations or feelings any given character may portray. If I can relate to them, I feel closer to them. Sometimes I deliberately distance myself, especially if the character is doing something I find ethically repulsive. Do you find it difficult to maintain a career as a writer? Yes. I have a full-time job, very stressful and demanding. I have a family that depends on me when I get home. I love to write, though, and can’t imagine not creating something. Tell us about your day job. I’m a social worker. When it comes to developing a plot and the characters where do you find your inspiration? I never find it. It finds me, beats me over the head with a club, and drags me to the nearest writing utensil. Usually, I dream about the characters and scenes before I write them down. What would you like to tell your readers? I truly hope you enjoy my latest book and return for more. ![]() Leigh Holland lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with her wonderful husband.
